Before delving into Catanese legends, that is, those that only concern our beloved city, we want to tell you about what is perhaps the most famous legend of all of eastern Sicily: the legend of the Caltagirone Moorhead.

La legend of the Moorhead is one of the most famous in eastern Sicily, not only in Catania. These characteristic ceramic vases, depicting human faces, adorn balconies and gardens all over the island, but their origin is linked to a story of passion and revenge. The story goes that around the year 1000, in the Arab quarter of Kalsa in Palermo, a young Sicilian girl fell in love with a handsome Moor. When she found out that the man would return to the East to his family, blinded by jealousy, she killed him and used his head as a pot to grow basil. This would grow luxuriant, watered by the young woman's tears.

Today, to admire the Moorheads of legend in their most authentic form, the perfect place is Caltagironethe capital of Sicilian ceramics. Here, local craftsmen continue to create these works of art, using age-old techniques.

📍Location of interest: Caltagirone can be reached in about an hour by car or by public transport, in particular by the Etna Trasporti ET04 bus that leaves daily from the centre of Catania.

Another version of the legend is set in Messina e tells of Lisabettaa young woman who, after the murder of her beloved Lorenzo by his brothers, hid his head in a basil pot, weeping over his lost love. If you have time to explore further, you can also visit Messina, a city linked to this other version of the legend, narrated by Boccaccio in the Decameron.

📍Location of interest: the distance of Messina from Catania is approximately 90 km. You can reach Messina by car in about 1.30 hours, train or bus.

Colapesce legend: the Catania variant of the myth

In addition to the story of the Moorheads, another very famous among Catanese legends is that of Colapesce. La Catania version is characterised by a particular link with Etna and for the details that make it a unique and evocative tale. Colapesce, a young man with incredible skills, was so enamoured of the sea that he spent weeks in the depths, exploring seabeds and reporting extraordinary stories. It was this fame that reached the ears of the king of Sicily, Frederick II of Swabiawho wanted to put it to the test.

According to legend, the king threw several objects into the abyss - a cup, a crown and finally a ring - challenging Colapesce to recover them. The young man not only succeeded in the feat, but revealed to the sovereign that Sicily rested on three pillars, one of which, the one under Capo Peloro, was dangerously crumbling. Frederick II, curious to discover the truth, ordered Colapesce a final descent. The boy accepted, but demanded that, in case he did not return, a signal - some lentils afloat - would announce his end.

He never returned, but the legend has it that Colapesce did not dieo: he sacrificed himself to support the cracked column, still supporting the whole of Sicily today. Every earthquake would be the result of the displacement of Colapescechanging the shoulder with which he holds the column, fatigued but still faithful to his task.

📍Location of interest: If you want to immerse yourself in the magic of this story, Catania offers some iconic places linked to Colapesce. University Square hosts one of the four bronze candelabra dedicated to the legenda real treat for those who want to discover the symbols of the city. In addition, in Republic Squareyou can admire the monument a Colapescemade in 1981 by sculptor Giuseppe Pellegrino.

Desperate over the arranged marriage, Angelina took her own life by throwing herself off one of the castle towers.
